All great leaders, especially in technology, are known by great speeches and presentation. It is one of the most important personality traits to boost your personal image and distinguish from others. You will often find reference to great speeches and presentations from technology leaders on LinkedIn, TED or other web sites. People just revere great presenters and try to follow them. And what is the most important thing a leader needs? Followers!
I am sure you always find yourself presenting new ideas, solutions, project plans, and budget requests to your peers and business leaders. Effective public speaking and presentation skills are key to success in any leadership role and CISO is no exception to it.
- Great presentations that create a “vow” effect will help you get your projects and budgets approved.
- You will build high credibility and great respect from your peers, higher ups, and people working for you.
- After your presentations, people will talk about you and will ask you to come and speak in their events, internal meetings, and conferences. This is a single best way to progress in your career.
Action Items
- There are many books but I recommend buying one particular book: The Exceptional Presenter.
- Write your presentation’s major points and rehearse.
- Record and watch yourself doing presentation. It is very easy these day to use iPhone, Android or other hand held devices to record your audio and video.
- Review some of the tips from my previous blog post at http://rafeeqrehman.com/2012/04/23/leadership-getting-ready-for-a-great-presentation/
- Master the art of creating one-slide presentation. I know a CEO who used a single slide presentation for his annual all-employee conference for three years in a row and was very effective. It included all elements of his strategy. Make your strategy slide and take it everywhere you can!
